Combination Plantings with Roses in the City

Roses combine well with other shrubs, flower bulbs and perennials. This creates perennial plantings full of variety and colour. Their high ornamental value has a positive effect on the health and well-being of residents and passers-by.

Good Neighbours

Thanks to their abundant and long-lasting flowering from mid-May until late autumn, roses offer high experiential value. In autumn, the colours of leaves and hips contribute to this effect. Some varieties, with their intense fragrance, provide an extra dimension to the enjoyment of greenery.

In the right spot, a rose planting can last for decades. Choose companion plants with the same growing requirements: a sunny location (at least 4 hours of sun) and well-drained soil. The more sun, the richer the bloom. Especially suitable are plants with an airy growth habit or low-growing plants; roses thrive best when they have space around them.

Classic Picture

Combine roses early in the year with bulbs that naturalise, such as botanical tulips and low-growing daffodils. Later in the season, the spherical blooms of Allium (ornamental onion) add an extra special look to rose plantings. An additional advantage is that aphids dislike the scent of Allium, while beneficial insects (including hoverflies) are attracted by it. Lavandula (lavender) also has this quality thanks to its fragrance. Lavender, like boxwood, creates a classic look when paired with roses. Spirea is another suitable shrub to combine with roses.

Colour Contrast

Ornamental grasses, Nepeta (catmint) and Geranium (cranesbill) are examples of perennials that pair well with roses. Alchemilla mollis (lady’s mantle) is a surprisingly beautiful combination with pink and red-flowering roses. Attractive plantings invite people to take a walk and engage in social contact, enhancing the well-being effect of greenery.
