Greening your garden with roses

Did you know that a green garden allows rainwater to drain more easily? And that greenery provides cooling in summer? The more green, the better. So remove paving. Roses are the perfect replacement: climate-resilient and endlessly blooming.

Be creative

Roses have few requirements: at least four hours of sun and well-drained soil. A climbing rose is already happy with the space of a single stone! Perfect for a small front garden. Or narrow your path or terrace to create a cheerful rose hedge. You can also make a playful cut-out in the middle of your paving to create a rose bed. Take a fresh look at your surroundings and be creative.

Step-by-step: remove a tile, plant a rose

Step 1: Pry out the tile(s).
Step 2: If there is more than 10 cm of (light) sand underneath, replace it with garden soil up to 30 cm deep. Optionally mix in compost.
Step 3: Dig a generous planting hole and add water.
Step 4: Carefully remove the rose from the pot. If there is a thickening at the base (the graft point), it should be 3 cm below ground level. Otherwise, keep the same depth as in the pot. Planting near a wall? Leave some distance so rainwater can reach the plant.
Step 5: Firm the soil lightly.
Step 6: Work in some organic fertilizer into the top layer.
Step 7: During dry periods, water sufficiently in the first weeks.

Rose fact

The name climbing rose is actually misleading. They have no tendrils or adhesive roots. You need to help them by training them upwards.

Cheerful accents

Roses can be combined with airy and low-growing perennials. Once established, roses continue to bloom tirelessly even during long dry periods. Wherever you plant them, roses bring cheerful highlights to your garden!
