Sustainable beauty in the city with roses

Roses are strong, healthy, and require little maintenance. With the right application and care, they will thrive for decades. In every planting plan, roses are indispensable – a true guarantee for sustainable beauty in urban landscapes.

A splash of colour

With their long flowering period, roses bring colour to green spaces well into autumn. Modern shrub roses can cover a planting bed within just one season, effectively suppressing weeds. Resistant to road salt, they are ideal for central reservations and roadside verges. Upright shrubs with large blooms, such as Hybrid Teas and Floribundas, create classic rose beds, while climbing roses add vertical colour as living walls or eye-catching features in parks and squares.

Extended ornamental value

The rose assortment is constantly evolving. In recent years, many own-root shrub roses have entered the market – with the advantage that they do not produce suckers. Thanks to their deep root systems, roses withstand hot and dry summers remarkably well. Extra watering is only needed for new plantings or during extreme droughts. After flowering, hips appear on wild and cultivated varieties, while the fiery autumn foliage of many species extends the decorative season in public planting schemes.

Practical and versatile

  • Roses combine beautifully with perennials and other shrubs.
  • As long as the soil is well-draining, all soil types are suitable.
  • Most roses need at least 4 hours of sun a day – the more sun, the richer the bloom.
  • Planting density is 4 to 5 shrubs per m², although some varieties require just 1 plant per m².

Own-root shrub roses are easy to prune mechanically in March or April (after the hardest frost) and can be cut annually or every few years, depending on the desired look.
